It’s Summer, Let’s Have Fun Safely!
The sun is out, and everyone is anxious to get outdoors. Summer can be a time filled with fun and adventure. There are also dangers along side the fun we all enjoy during the summer months. Let’s look at ways to keep your family safe while having fun.
Heading to the beach or pool in the summer is a great way to spend time. Prepare in advance for sun exposure, hydration, and water safety. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before sun exposure, and again every 2 hours. Also, using an umbrella to limit the amount of time in the sun is a good idea. Bring plenty of water to be sure to keep everyone properly hydrated. Check temperatures to make sure it is not too hot, especially for young children. Dehydration can happen quickly even when swimming. Be sure to take breaks from the water to eat and drink.
One of the biggest dangers can be pools, lakes, and the ocean. Always supervise your child in and around water no matter how deep or shallow. Do not allow your child to swim or play in water without adult supervision. It is important to teach your child water safety, and to make sure to follow the rules when visiting pools, lakes, or the beach.
Riding bikes is a fun family friendly activity. Bike safety is important to the overall safety of your child. Be sure that your child is wearing a well fitted helmet whenever they ride their bike or scooter. Be an example and wear your helmet when riding too. Helmets protect you and your child from head injury and should be worn even if your bike ride is short. Be sure the bike is the right size for your child, and that they know how to properly operate their bike, including breaks and other safety features.
The playground is a wonderful way for your child to get needed exercise. When visiting a playground in the summer be sure to touch equipment to make sure it is not too hot for your child’s skin. Check equipment for any hazards, and always supervise your child especially when they are climbing. It is important to make sure that your child is the right size and age for the equipment.
Camping is another fun family event that many people enjoy. Protecting your family from insects will help make your camping trip safe. Use proper bug spray and if camping in the woods be sure to use something that protects against ticks. If you are planning to make a campfire be sure to teach your children fire safety and always supervise children and pets when near an open fire.
Remember, summer is a time filled with outdoor fun and adventure! Taking the steps necessary to ensure your family’s safety will make your summer
